Mel Smith LLB (Hons) - Managing Director
"DCC have used the legal services of Mel Smith and her team since 2004...We have developed a close relationship over the years and I am always impressed with the detail and quality of the legal advice provided."
Mel has over 20 years' experience in business law and has built a strong commercial and employment law practice during this period. In the last ten years Mel has led the Dixcart Legal team and developed a department of highly skilled commercial and employment lawyers. Mel's practical commercial approach is reflected in her team who always demonstrate an exceptional working ethic and provide comprehensive transactional, commercial and employment expertise.
Mel's clients include PLCs and UK subsidiaries of large multi-nationals as well as owner managed businesses.
Mel has extensive experience in assisting foreign businesses on acquiring an existing UK business and establishing a branch or subsidiary in the UK, including all employment matters, as well as advising UK based employers planning to employ foreign nationals within the UK.
Mel has sound drafting skills and is adept at understanding complex legal issues. She is a strategic thinker and is highly regarded for her problem-solving abilities.
Mel worked closely with international business advisers, Dixcart International Limited, to launch Dixcart Legal, an Alternative Business Structure (ABS), in May 2014; the entire Morgan Russell team transferred to Dixcart Legal. An ABS enables lawyers and non-lawyers to work together to give clients flexibility in terms of the business organisation and management.
Mel trained with a medium sized firm of solicitors working in their offices in London’s Covent Garden and in Surrey, and qualified as a solicitor in 1992. She joined Morgan Russell as a partner in July 1999 shortly after its formation. Mel was instrumental in ensuring that Morgan Russell was one of the first firms to move to the then new LLP business structure.
Mel was appointed Managing Partner in 2007 and now leads Dixcart Legal as its Managing Director.
